As the sibling to someone with Down syndrome you have the opportunity to encourage, support and advocate for your brother or sister. 

You may also have questions and concerns.

The Sibling Support Project is a web site designed for siblings of those with Special needs.

Special-Needs and Sibling Rivalry

If you are a parent,here are some detailed tipsto help your other children as they cope and grow in the role of sibling to an individual with Ds.

            Some imporatant tips for parents to remember:

  • Be open and honest
  • Allow siblings to express negative feelings
  • Recognize difficult moments
  • Limit care giving responsibilities
  • Recognize the uniqueness of each child in the family
  • Be fair
  • Take advantage of supports for siblings
  • Parents need support, too
